ENGLISH EDUCATION FOR EARLY CHILDHOOD LEARNER

Abstract


Artikel ini membahas tentang pendidikan bahasa Inggris untuk anak usia dini. Kemampuan seseorang untuk menggunakan bahasa Inggris diperlukan seiring dengan kemajuan suatu negara. Itulah alasan mengapa bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa Internasional mulai diperkenalkan sesegera mungkin kepada para siswa di Indonesia saat ini. Artikel ini menggunakan studi pustaka yang teknik pengumpulan datanya dilakukan melalui review buku teks, review literatur, catatan, dan laporan yang terkait dengan pendidikan bahasa Inggris untuk anak usia dini. Pendidikan bahasa Inggris akan ideal jika dimulai sejak usia dini, terutama sebelum anak-anak berusia 12 tahun. Anak usia dini adalah anak pada rentang sekitar 2 - 7 tahun. Di usia itu adalah periode emas dalam pengembangan keterampilan bahasa anak-anak. Pada periode ini, mereka dapat mempelajari bahasa apa pun seperti pembicara asli dan periode ini harus digunakan sebaik mungkin. Namun, anak-anak pada usia dini masih berada pada kondisi perkembangan kognitif praoperasional yang memiliki sifat egosentris yang tinggi, belum memahami hal-hal abstrak, hanya memahami simbol-simbol dan masih berpikir pra-logis (belum logis). Oleh karena itu, bahasa Inggris untuk anak-anak membutuhkan metode yang tepat dan efektif untuk digunakan dalam proses pembelajaran. Ada beberapa metode dan teknik yang tepat untuk mengajar bahasa Inggris untuk anak usia dini seperti dalam konteks komunikatif. Kontek tersebut termasuk konteks situasi sosial, budaya, permainan, nyanyian dan musik, mendongeng, pengalaman yang artistik, kerajinan tangan dan aktifitas-aktifitas yang memprioritaskan gerakan fisik. Di antara metode dan teknik yang disebutkan, pendekatan dengan lagu (nyanyian dan music) dan gerak adalah metode yang sangat tepat dan sukses dalam melaksanakan pembelajaran bahasa Inggris untuk anak usia dini.

This article discusses about English education for early childhood. One's ability to use English is needed along with the progress of a country. That is the reason why English as an International language began introduced as soon as possible to the students in Indonesia nowadays. This article uses a literature study which the data collection technique done by a review study of textbooks, literatures, notes, and reports which related to English education for young learners. English education will be ideal if it starts from an early age, especially before the children turn into 12 years old. Early childhood is the child on the range about 2 - 7 years. In that age is a golden period in the development of children's language skills. In this period, they are able to learn any languages like the original speakers and this period should be used as well as possible. However, children at an early age are still on the preoperational cognitive development condition that has high egocentricity, have not understood the abstract things yet, just understand on the symbols and still pre-logical minded. Therefore, English for children requires a proper and effective methods in teaching process. There are several appropriate methods and techniques for teaching English for early childhood such as in the communicative context. They are including the context of social situations, culture, games, singing and music, storytelling, artistic experiences, handicrafts and prioritizing physical movement. Between methods and techniques mentioned, the approach with song and motion is a very appropriate and successful method in English education for early childhood.
